Doing Nothing

One of my beloved former seminary teaching colleagues riled the seminary administration because of the incident I’m relating here. He was a popular professor of society and ethics with a few detractors among students and faculty. He had a dramatic flair in his day to day living and certainly in his lecturing. I didn’t witness this; some students who were present told me about it.
One day in mid-lecture he yelled out to his students. Did Jesus call us to do nothing?
He jumped on a desk to answer his own question: Fuck no, he said. Not the typical lecture language for a seminary professor so the students were shocked!
It was soon time to dismiss class for the day. Before sending his students on their way he said, Some of you will be more upset today with my choice of words than with the content of what I said. I hope you will hurry over to the dean’s office right now and get your complaints registered. The rest of us will be taking care of some Jesus business.
